The Mystery of Antique Diamond Rings

When shopping for an engagement ring for a potential bride or a special gift for a loved one, modern diamond rings are usually appreciated by their receiver. However, when you are seeking a present that is special and timeless and one of a kind, an antique diamond ring might be just the thing you are looking for.

Just like more modern diamond rings, antique diamond rings come in a wide variety of shapes and styles and can be bought in some regular jewelry stores or from a special antique dealer. Some people have antique rings that were passed down from generation to generation from their grandmothers, great-grandmothers, great-great grandmothers, etc. These pieces can be hundreds of years old. The older they are, the more value they hold to both the owner and a potential buyer.

When you decide to purchase an antique diamond ring, it is important to know what you are looking for, the cut of diamond you want and how much you are willing to pay for it. Also, you have to know what style you are seeking and what design you want.

During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, old mine cut diamonds were available and had an extra facet on the bottom of the diamond. When diamond cutting became more refined in the early 20th century that is when the more modern, brilliant cut became widely used. The difference between older diamonds and more modern diamonds, is that they are worth less per point. For example, 100 points is equal to 1 karat. During the Victorian era, yellow and sometimes pink 10 and 14 karat gold was used and the jewelry was often topped with silver.

Whether you are buying a modern day diamond ring or an antique diamond ring, the size of the diamond will determine how much you will have to pay for it. One thing that differentiates a diamond ring of today and an antique one is the craftsmanship that was used in the past is different than that of today. One example of this is the platinum filigree of the Edwardian period.

Furthermore, rings that were made hundreds of years ago require special care and treatment and need to have a thorough check done by a good jeweler to ensure the diamonds are not loose, and so the diamonds and the ring can be cleaned. It may be a good idea also to have the ring insured and inspected by a gemologist to have the stones certified.
