Natural diamonds are diamonds that come straight from the earth and were formed a long time ago. They have not been treated or enhanced in any way by a lab. They go directly from the mine in which they were found to the dealer. Most natural diamonds are large and clear and that is why they are so rare and very expensive.

The difference between natural diamonds and created or treated diamonds is that with natural diamonds nothing is done to them before they are sent to the dealer. Synthetic diamonds are a creation of a unique technological process. These are diamonds created in a laboratory. A knowledgeable gemologist could easily tell the difference between a natural and a synthetic diamond using special equipment. To the average person, however, the two can be fairly indistinguishable.

Natural diamonds come to us straight from the ground and that ground can be located virtually anywhere. We get natural diamonds from Canada, Australia, Russia and South Africa. If you were to see a diamond directly after it was mined you probably wouldn’t recognize it as the diamonds you are used to seeing. That is why not all of the diamonds mined are good enough to be called gems. Diamonds that are very small or are poorly colored are referred to as industrial diamonds and are used for machines and to make other tools. They are therefore utilized to craft other things and are not wasted.
